Assessment

According to Public Chapter 978, passed by the Tennessee 112th General Assembly, if requested by a parent or student, a test administrator (TA) may allow a student an additional optional time period (as specified in the state's guidance) to ensure students can complete the assessments. The required testing times, outlined on the Tennessee Department of Education’s website, represent durations appropriate for 95% of students. TAs may add the optional additional time, up to the amount listed in parentheses, as requested, while adhering to all test security measures and procedures. The additional optional time permitted by Public Chapter 978 does not supersede a Local Education Agency’s (LEA’s) or public charter school's obligation to comply with the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (20 U.S.C. § 1400 et seq.) or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act (29 U.S.C. § 794). Therefore, time requested under Public Chapter 978 should not replace extra time accommodations outlined in a student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP), Individual Learning Plan (ILP), or Section 504 Plan.
