Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting
Henry County School System is committed to the safety and well-being of all students. Tennessee law requires any person who suspects a child has been abused or neglected to report it immediately. This includes teachers, staff, parents, and community members. Failure to report suspected child abuse is a violation of state law.
Recognizing Signs of Child Abuse or Neglect
Abuse may be physical, sexual, or emotional, and neglect occurs when a child’s basic needs are not being met. Warning signs may include, but are not limited to:
Unexplained injuries, burns, or bruises
Sudden changes in behavior or school performance
Fear of going home or fear of certain individuals
Poor hygiene, malnutrition, or consistently inappropriate clothing
Inappropriate sexual behaviors or knowledge for the child’s age
Lack of supervision or unattended medical needs
How to Report Suspected Child Abuse in Tennessee
If you suspect a child is being abused or neglected, you must report it immediately:
Tennessee Child Abuse Hotline: 1-877-237-0004 (available 24/7)
Online Reporting: Child Abuse Reporting
In Emergencies: Call 911
Reports may be made confidentially, and reporters are protected by law from retaliation. You do not need proof—only reasonable suspicion is required to make a report.
School District Responsibility
All Henry County School System employees are mandated reporters. Staff members who suspect abuse or neglect must:
Report directly to the Tennessee Child Abuse Hotline or law enforcement, and
Notify the school principal or designated administrator that a report has been made (without disclosing the reporter’s identity if
confidentiality is requested).
Protecting Students Together
By recognizing and reporting signs of abuse, we can work together to keep our children safe and ensure they have the opportunity to learn and thrive in a supportive environment.
