Special Education - IDEA 619 Pre-School and IDEA Part B

The Henry County School System provides special education services for children ages three through twenty-one (3–21) who have been identified with disabilities. The State of Tennessee recognizes thirteen (13) disability categories under which a child may qualify for special education and related services:

  • Specific Learning Disability

  • Autism

  • Intellectual Disability

  • Deaf-Blindness

  • Deafness

  • Developmental Delay

  • Functional Delay

  • Hearing Impairment

  • Multiple Disabilities

  • Speech or Language Impairment

  • Traumatic Brain Injury

  • Visual Impairment

  • Intellectually Gifted

To determine eligibility, the district conducts a comprehensive evaluation process. This process may include input from parents and guardians, classroom teachers, medical professionals, and specialists, as well as a variety of assessments designed to measure a child’s individual needs. Areas evaluated may include, but are not limited to, vision, hearing, speech and language, fine and gross motor skills, cognitive ability, and social/emotional development.

If a child is found to meet Tennessee’s state eligibility standards and requires special education services, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) will be developed. The IEP outlines specific goals, accommodations, and supports to ensure that the child receives an appropriate education in the least restrictive environment.
