Buchanan, TN – Lakewood strings students are getting ready for their May 15 concert, tuning instruments, plucking strings, and looking at sheets of music when their music teacher, Kevin Price, tells them they will need to memorize and play a piece of music they just started for Board Members on Thursday, using bows, a technique they are only just learning. With eyes growing larger and panic beginning to set in, he laughs and says, “April Fools!” With a sigh of relief, students begin their lessons, identifying notes and plucking along on their individual violins, violas, or cellos.

Price travels to different Henry County schools to teach strings, chorus and music theory. A music education major, Price studied at various schools including the University of TN at Martin, Illinois State, and the University of Memphis. He plays the trumpet, baritone, and the cello. Price was inspired to choose music as a career by his older brothers who played percussion and his Jackson, TN South Side High School music teacher, Eric Williams.

Music is an important part of the Price family. His wife, Kayla, is the music teacher at Henry Elementary School and his children, Brighton and Riley, are also interested in music. Brighton is a 6th grader at Henry and plays the trumpet, piano, and percussion instruments. Riley, 3rd grader at Henry plays the piano and is learning percussion instruments. “Having a music room in the house, we play together. One Christmas, Brighton was practicing the trumpet and Kayla and I joined in and we had a spontaneous trio.”

Price says he is looking forward to the May 15 concert at Lakewood which will feature a combination of band, chorus, and strings. The program will start at 6:00 PM in the Lakewood gymnasium.
