Day of Champions at the Henry County Fair
Friday was full of fun as many of our HCSS students participated in the annual Day of Champions. Students enjoyed fun activities, including showing animals. The Junior Fair Board members and others assisted in the day. Thanks to all involved for making this a fun day for our students!

Fair Field Trip Helps Students Explore Agriculture
Third and fourth graders from Harrelson, Henry, and Lakewood enjoyed a field trip to the Henry County Fair on Thursday. Students were able to visit a variety of stations, including Paris Landing State Park’s Birds of Prey, fun agricultural interactions, law enforcement information, fun games, and more. In addition, students spent time visiting the Enoch Building to view exhibits and sitting in the stands to watch their peers show animals. Our students enjoyed a fun day of learning!
The Henry Country Fairgrounds was full of anticipation and excitement today as students from across the area participated in the Junior Hog, Lamb, Goat, and Steer Shows. Not only do these students learn to prepare their animal for show, but they learn so many life skills—responsibility, dedication, caring, how to accept feedback to get better, determination, how to make eye contact and shake hands, and so much more! Ask any of these competitors about their animal or how long they’ve been showing, and you’ll see their eyes light up! Congratulations to all the students involved today!

Gabby Young serves as Third Annual Miss Ag-Vocate of Henry County
In its third year for the Henry County Fair, Henry County High School senior Gabby Young is serving as this year’s MISS AG-VOCATE of Henry County.
As part of her responsibilities, Gabby will be responsible for social media posts throughout the year regarding agriculture. She plans to feature special agriculture-related months, just as Dairy Month in June, as well as special seasonal information, such as safety during harvest season. Gabby also hopes to visit local classrooms to read to children about agriculture.
Having lived in California and Idaho through 6th grade, Gabby and her family moved to Henry County during middle school. Before living here, her family owned chickens, and agriculture became of interest to her. Since moving to Henry County, her family owns Duroc meat pigs, and they participated in the Murray Farmers Market last year.
Originally, Gabby thought she would pursue a degree as a veterinarian. She is now leaning towards a career in Agriculture Business or Agriculture Education. Gabby will graduate high school as a completer in both the Veterinary Science and Agriculture Business pathways offered at HCHS.
In speaking about Gabby’s role, Fair Board member Michelle Hopkins shared that Gabby was chosen to serve as this year’s Miss Ag-Vocate based on her strong resume and written essay. Serving in prior years were HCHS students Cori Hopkins and Sarah Moody Poe.

HCHS Students on the Henry County Fair Court
Serving on the 2026 Fairest of the Fair Court are Henry County High School students First Maid Ellie Hamlin (12th), Second Maid Kenna Miles (11th), Third Maid Makenzy Cox (12th), and Fourth Maid Charlotte Danks (11th).
When asked what they enjoy most about the Fair, Makenzy states she enjoys promoting the fair and attending the Derby, Charlotte enjoys show day and is in her fourth year showing lambs, Ellie enjoys seeing all the people who attend, and Kenna most enjoys the Day of Champions, when special needs students from our community attend the fair.
Congratulations, Ladies, and thank you for representing our community well!
HCHS Students Serve on the Junior Fair Board
Henry County High School and Grove Freshman Academy students who serve on the Henry County Junior Fair Board have been busy this week! From set up to clean up, early mornings to late nights, these students have put leadership into action by serving our community. This morning, members of the Junior Fair Board were seen greeting guests at the August Chamber of Commerce Coffee, held at the Enoch Building.
Henry County School System students serving this year on the Fair Board include: Abby Bush (10th), Cooper Carver (11th), Airlie Daniels (11th), Coy Gasper (9th), Gatlin Gulish (9th), Brooks Parker (12th), Sarah Moody Poe (12th), Emsley Sherrod (9th), Brodie Warbritton (10th), and Gabby Young (12th).

A Day to Be Brave: Lakewood Students Enjoy Visit from Children’s Book Author and Illustrator
A visit on Thursday from author and illustrator Angelique Monet was enjoyed by Lakewood students pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Monet shared her children’s book, The Bravest Worrier, with students and explained that the book was written when her daughter was struggling with worry at age seven.
Students were encouraged by Monet to be brave, courageous, and confident when worry surfaces. After sharing specific examples, Monet read the book to the children and interacted with them by asking questions and involving them in their time together.
In addition, Monet and her husband, “Mr. Z,” shared an interactive companion app that was designed by him, which allows readers to use a device to watch 3D characters of the book pop off the page.
After hearing from Monet, students were able to look at and touch objects she brought with her that showcase items included in the book. Students rotated in groups for 45 minute sessions with the author.
Back in the classroom, teachers reviewed materials and completed activities with students, encouraging them to dream big, embrace challenges, and reflect on their A Day to Be Brave.
Monet currently resides in the Atlanta area. This engaging experience was coordinated by the administration of Lakewood School, along with school librarian Shay Armstrong.

HCHS Robotics Team Earns "Most Outstanding Rookie Team" at International Competition in Oklahoma
The Henry County High School (HCHS) Robotics Team made an impressive mark on the international stage this summer at the Global Conference on Educational Robotics (GCER), hosted in Norman, Oklahoma. Competing against elite student teams from around the world, the HCHS squad was honored with the prestigious Most Outstanding Rookie Team award.
During the week-long event, students programmed and deployed autonomous robots to tackle complex engineering challenges and real-time problem-solving tasks. The HCHS student team in attendance included Nina Bechert, Lane Dotson, Myklan Fulton, and Christopher Jackson. The team was guided and supported by Coaches Matthew Chisolm and Travis Jackson.
"We couldn't be prouder of how hard these students worked leading up to and during the competition," said Coach Matthew Chisolm. "To walk away with top rookie honors on an international platform speaks volumes about their dedication, technical skills, and teamwork." Coach Travis Jackson was quoted as saying "I'm not sure who gained more from attending the competition, the students or me. They were phenomenal." GCER brings together middle school, high school, and university students from around the world, as well as educators and researchers, to showcase cutting-edge educational robotics and autonomous technology.

The Henry County High School Robotics Team provides students with hands-on experience in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) through robot design, autonomous programming, and competitive teamwork. For the first time in the school's history, HCHS is offering Robotics class for students interested in Science and Technology. HCHS is excited to instill skills in these young scientists that they can use to differentiate themselves from the crowd as they enter a challenging workforce after graduation.
