Visit by Cherry Jones, famous actress and HCHS alumna, launches the 2026-27 HCHS Speech Team

The Henry County High School Speech and Debate Team got a visit from a well known former competitor this week. Cherry Jones, who recently was nominated for an Emmy award for her performance on the HBO series “Hacks,” and is starring in a new upcoming Netflix series, stopped by a practice session while in town to check in with the students.

Team Coach David Weatherly said, “It’s important for the students to see and hear about what opportunities are out there after graduating high school. A few students have expressed a desire to pursue a professional career in acting. Cherry spoke with them about how much the Speech Team meant to her while she was here, and how much it influences her still with her acting career.”

The team is 30 members strong this year, and is adding debate back to the events offered to the kids. “Debate has not been offered for several years but several students approached me and wanted to give it a try this year. I immediately said yes. It is a much needed skill and, along with the other events we offer, extremely beneficial to the students learning and future work plans.” Weatherly said.

The team has two seniors this year who have been with the team all four years, Timothy Tyler and Canaan Barrow. While Barrow got his start with the Inman Middle School team, Tyler began his speech team career in 5th grade at Lakewood for the county middle school team. While they are sad to see their time on the team end, as they graduate in May, they begin their journey using the skills they learned in the real world.

Barrow says of his time on the team, “It has not only developed my skills as a communicator and leader, but a valuable experience socially. Skills that will be crucial as I continue to compete in college and in pursuit of my degree in Political Science.” Tyler agrees, stating, “Speech didn’t just teach me how to talk, it taught me why my voice matters. It turned words on a page into live stories that can move people emotionally, build empathy and deliver messages to the world.”

Weatherly continues his big plans for the team this year as they prepare to attend The Barkley Forum at Emory University in Atlanta in January. “Last season we took the students to Harvard University to compete. Both Timothy and Canaan placed in the final rounds at the Cambridge tournament and hope to continue their success in Atlanta this year.”

The team will also be working toward the ultimate annal goal of attending the National Speech & Debate Association’s National Tournament next June. That contest will be held in Phoenix, AZ.
