Recognition of Mr. John T. Hinson

The late Mr. John T. Hinson has been recognized as the newest inductee into the Henry County School System Wall of Fame.

During the Henry County School System's annual Back-to-School Kickoff on Wednesday, July 29, Mr. Hinson's family was honored as he was officially recognized for his decades of service and lasting impact on the district. Director of Schools Dr. Leah Watkins opened the recognition by introducing Tiffany Latta, who nominated Mr. Hinson for this distinguished honor. Latta then shared information from her original nomination (included below).

Mr. Hinson faithfully served the Henry County School System from 1975 to 2011 as a teacher, coach, principal, and assistant director of schools. Throughout his career, he influenced countless students, educators, and families through his leadership, dedication, and commitment to public education.

As part of the recognition, the Henry County School System teachers were asked to stand if Mr. Hinson had made a meaningful impact on their lives. A large number of the audience members rose to their feet, representing former students and colleagues who worked alongside him. The moving tribute concluded with a standing ovation in honor of his remarkable legacy.

Mr. Hinson's name has been added to the Henry County School System Wall of Fame, and a bronze, three-dimensional plaque featuring his likeness will be permanently displayed. The plaque states, “John T. Hinson Jr. In recognition of his exceptional leadership and lasting contributions to the Henry County School System. His influence and enduring legacy continue to guide and inspire future generations.”

The proposal submitted for recognition on the Henry County School System Wall of Excellence; submitted by Tiffany Latta, April 2026

Born on March 14, 1951, Mr. Hinson was native of Buchanan and a member of the final graduating class of Buchanan High School prior to the consolidation that led to the opening of Henry County High School.

Mr. Hinson earned his bachelor's degree in secondary education from the University of Tennessee at Martin in 1973, beginning his career as a teacher and coach at Springville School. His dedication to education quickly became evident, and in 1976, after earning his master's degree in education administration and supervision from UT Martin, he was named principal of Springville School.

In 1979, Mr. Hinson became principal of Henry County High School, where he served with distinction for nearly two decades. At just 28 years old, he was the youngest principal of a AAA high school in the state of Tennessee-an early indication of the leadership, confidence, and respect he commanded. In 1998, he was appointed Assistant Director of Schools, a role he faithfully served in until his passing in 2011.

Mr. Hinson was married to Bonnie Coats Hinson on March 17, 1973 and had one son John T. Hinson III.

John T. Hinson Jr. devoted his entire life and career to the Henry County School System, leaving a legacy that continues to impact students, staff, and the community today. Throughout his career, Mr. Hinson touched countless lives through his leadership, integrity, and unwavering commitment to students and staff. He was known for treating every individual with fairness, respect, and consistency. His calm demeanor, wisdom, and quiet strength made him a trusted leader and a steady presence in the district.

John T. Hinson's legacy is one of excellence in education and service. His influence is still felt across Henry County, and his contributions have helped shape the foundation of our school system.
